These groups co-opt attire designed for the Special Forces, presumably to project power and prestige in their communities. But what is driving the growth of this market?
Pen Pockets
Located on the sleeves of combat shirts, these pockets are designed for writing utensils. They are closed by a zipper or hook-and-loop Velcro, and they make it easy to access the tools you need when on the go.
Aside from the obvious, pen-focused martial arts classes, tactical pens can also be used to break glass in a car accident or to alert others to your predicament if you’re trapped in a submerged vehicle. They’re also useful if you can’t carry a pocket knife or pepper spray.
To make one, fold the short ends of a piece of scrap leather about 1/2 inch down and iron to crease them. Then, pin the long edges to the strap, about 1/8 inch from the edge of the belt. Finally, sew the long edges to the strap. If you want to make multiple pens, simply repeat the process for each one. The finished product looks like a regular pen, so it can be easily hidden in a uniform or jacket pocket.
Shoulder Pockets
The shoulder pocket is a convenient and lightweight way to add storage without adding noticeable bulk. It snaps open and shut easily to fit most phones, small point-and-shoot cameras or a 500ml soft water flask. It connects to your shoulder strap daisy chain webbing via quick clips on top and bottom. It’s a great addition to the Gossamer Gear pack line and fits most packs with vertical daisy chains on the shoudler strap.
It’s also compatible with the Peak Design Capture Clip. However, depending on how heavily you load it up, it can feel a bit bulky on your shoulders and might require a little practice to get used to.

The simple design makes it easy for others to identify their rank and know how to address them. This is especially important in a warzone where many of the people you encounter might not speak your language.

The fabric can be made to resemble any material, and is available in a variety of colors. It is also resistant to abrasion and mildew. It is also highly flexible. This is a great option for military gear.
